Etruscan Style

Etruscan style jewellery The Etruscan culture dates back to the 8th century BC and disappeared in the 3rd century BC.

Etruria was never a state, but more like a stretched out region encompassing different cities from above Bologna in northern Italy, all the way down to south of Naples. In archeology, the Etruscans became known for their use of vibrant colours and animated imagery, often including dance, sports and religious scenes. The Etruscans had a highly developed culture, which was proven by the artefacts, jewellery and architectural remains, but also by the rare writing found on golden tablets.  They were masters in different crafts, among which jewellery making. It comes as no surprise that people in other ages were fascinated by this vanished culture. So they emulated elements of the Etruscan in their jewellery. The first visible influence of the impact of ancient cultures can be found through humanism in the Renaissance. Images referring to the dress and visual styles were appearing in Renaissance jewellery. After the Renaissance, it took a while before the popularity of the Etruscans resurged in the late 19th century, roughly between 1850 and 1900. They called it: Etruscan Style. Much of the 19th century jewellery was inspired grave finds, in jewellery and other items, probably intended for life after death. In decorative elements like mini amphorae and micro mosaic, and techniques like filigree and embossing, the Etruscans were being rediscovered and emulated.
